CBR’s Kansas All-Time Team
C Wilt Chamberlain (7′ 1″ 275 lbs.)
One of the greatest players of all time. He averaged 30.1 points a game in ‘58. The year before, Chamberlain averaged 29.6 points a game. He also holds the school’s record for most points in a single game.
C-F Clyde Lovellette (6′ 9″ 235 lbs.)
Lovellette scored 33 points and grabbed 17 rebounds in the ‘52 national championship game. Averaged 28.6 points a game that season, which is the school’s third-best scoring average in a season.
F Danny Manning (6′ 10″ 230 lbs.)
Manning was the consensus player of the year in ‘88. He ranks eighth in NCAA Division I history in scoring. Manning is the school’s all-time leader in points and rebounds. He also led Kansas to a national championship and scored 31 points and pulled down 18 rebounds in the championship game. He is easily considered to be one of the best college players of all time.
G Jo Jo White (6′ 3″ 190 lbs.)
Like Paul Pierce, White is known for his days with the Celtics. However, White was a two-time first team All American. He also was the second-leading scorer on the ‘68 Gold medal Olympic team.
G Kirk Hinrich (6′ 3″ 190 lbs.)
Hinrich was a great scoring point guard. Recent point guards Aaron Miles and Jacque Vaughn could be placed here. Hinrich is the school’s ninth all-time leading scorer. He is also fourth all time in steals and assists.
Reserves:
C-F Dave Robisch (6′ 10″ 235 lbs.)
Robisch averaged 26.5 points and 12.1 rebounds a game his junior year in ‘70.
F-G Bud Stallworth (6′ 5″ 190 lbs.)
Stallworth averaged 25.3 points and 7.7 rebounds a game his senior year. He was named BIG 8 Player of the Year and first team All-America. He is second behind Chamberlain for points in a single game.
G Mario Chalmers (6′ 1″ 195 lbs.)
Chalmers is the team leader on a great Kansas team. He has shown the leadership at a very young age. He consistently scores, rebounds, makes assists, gets steals and plays smart. One of the best players in the game today. He should break the school record for steals.
F Paul Pierce (6′ 6″ 230 lbs.)
Pierce, more known for his Celtic days, was also a great college player. He led the team in scoring in ‘98 with 777 points, which was good for fifth best all time in school history. Pierce had 11 career double-doubles including four consecutive in ‘97. He is currently seventh all time in scoring for Kansas.
F Nick Collison (6′ 9″ 255 lbs.)
Collison is the school’s second all-time leading scorer and third all-time leading rebounder. In his career, he had 37 double-doubles. He also was a solid shot blocking, leading the BIG-12 in ‘02. In 2003, he was the NABC National Player of the Year.
-OR-
F Raef LaFrentz (6′ 11″ 240 lbs.)
LaFrentz is the school’s second all-time leading scorer and third all-time leading rebounder. He suffered a hand injury that prevented him from breaking the rebound record. He was a two-time consensus first team All-American in ‘97 and ‘98. LaFrentz leads all Jayhawks with 56 career double-doubles. He also had 60 10-rebound games.
I leaving this team up for debate. Email collegebasketballreference@gmail.com if you want to voice you opinion. I had trouble picking this team. With the exception of Wilt Chamberlain and Danny Manning, every other spot is up for grabs. I had trouble picking between Nick Collison and Raef LaFrentz, so I picked both (for now, but I have to cut my roster down to 10). I also had trouble picking between Aaron Miles and Jacque Vaughn, so I left both of them off. The problem with picking an all-time team, especially a Kansas all-time team is that you can throw the stats out the window and have concentrate on the player’s impact itself. Also, I’m a huge Mario Chalmers fan and others might prefer Darnell Valentine. One thing is for certain this is one of the best programs in the history of college basketball.
The following are players (and ones to consider for the soon to be updated team) that almost made my team:
Bill Bridges, Tus Ackerman, Jacque Vaughn, Darnell Valentine, Charlie T. Black, Charlie B. Black, B.H. Born, Paul Endacott, Howard Engleman, Ray Evans, Max Falkenstien, Gale Gordon, Al Peterson, Fred Pralle, Walter Wesley, Drew Gooden, Aaron Miles, Greg Ostertag, Wayne Hightower.
