Weekend Recap: Top 25 Teams Continue to Lose
By Adam Kiefaber
Two of the top four teams lost over the weekend to unranked opponents. Seven other AP Top 25 teams lost as well.
The consensus No. 1 team in both polls, North Carolina lost 80-82 to an average Maryland team.
The Terrapins have been struggling all season, while the Tar Heels had yet to lose a game despite a few close encounters with Davidson, Clemson and Georgia Tech.
CBR has had UNC ranked at No. 3 in its top 25 all season long, behind Memphis and Kansas. Now, it is turn for the major polls to follow suit.
The other major upset was USC over UCLA.
The Trojans came in the game with a 10-6 record (1-3 in the PAC-10).
Despite the record, USC has the talent to beat anyone especially its rival.
Freshman Davon Jefferson led USC with a career-high 25 points.
Other upsets this weekend included Kansas St. over No. 10 Texas A&M, UCONN over No. 13 Marquette, Cincinnati over No. 15 Pittsburgh, Auburn over No. 18 Mississippi, N.C. State over No. 21 Miami (FLA.) and Stanford over No. 22 Arizona State.
The losing trend started earlier in the week - As No. 5 Georgetown lost to Pitt (Monday), No. 12 Butler lost to Cleveland State (Thursday), No. 13 Marquette lost to Louisville (Thursday), No. 14 Dayton lost to UMASS (Wednesday), No. 16 Vanderbilt (after losing to UK last Saturday) lost to No. 6 Tennessee (Thursday), No. 20 Xavier lost to Temple (Wednesday), No. 21 Miami lost to Boston College (Tuesday) and No. 23 Rhode Island lost to St. Louis (Thursday).
With all that losing, the AP should be very interesting when it comes out later today.
